James D. Hoey, III

James D. Hoey, III is an accomplished trial lawyer who has served as counsel on numerous serious injury, wrongful death, and mass litigation matters. Mr. Hoey’s achievements include thirteen verdicts or settlements over $1 million, including three over $10 million. In 2005, he secured the largestsettlement ever obtained against Santa Barbara’s Metropolitan Transit District. In 2006, he was co-counsel on a serious injury case in Imperial County that resulted in a $5.6 million verdict, believed to be the largest single-plaintiff injury verdict in Imperial County history. He has tried cases and achieved multi-million dollar results in the San Francisco, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Joaquin, Imperial, Orange, and San Diego Counties of California.

In recognition of his efforts, Mr. Hoey has been awarded an AV rating from Martindale Hubbell, the national directory of attorneys. This is the highest possible peer ranking an attorney can receive, indicating preeminent legal ability and the utmost ethical standards. In 2009, Mr. Hoey was also recognized as a San Diego Super Lawyer. His prior law firm, Strange & Hoey, was named by California Lawyer as one of California’s five most successful small firms.

Mr. Hoey received his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in political science from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1978, and his Juris Doctorate from Hastings College of the Law in 1981. Mr. Hoey is a member of the American Bar Association, the San Diego County Bar Association, and the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego. He was admitted to the California Bar in 1981.

Benjamin R. Anderson

Benjamin R. Anderson is an associate trial attorney who brings his vigor and enthusiasm to every case, relentlessly paying attention to detail in all aspects of his work. Due to his outstanding performance in Appellate Advocacy, Ben was also invited to perform on the school’s moot court team.

Ben belongs to Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, the San Diego County Bar Association and regularly attends the annual legal education conference held by the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. Ben also volunteers each year as a moot court justice at the University of San Diego, School of Law.

Alicia Covill

Alicia Covill has worked as James Hoey’s paralegal and office manager for over twenty years. She graduated of the University of California at San Diego in 1986 with a B.A. in English Literature, after which she graduated from the University of San Diego’s Paralegal Program with honors. She has over twenty-five years of experience as a litigation paralegal.

Ms. Covill works closely with the attorneys with all aspects of the litigation process, including investigation, research, discovery, and legal writing. Ms. Covill also manages The Hoey Law Firm. Ms. Covill’s experience and knowledge are indispensable to clients of The Hoey Law Firm.

Ms. Covill is a long-time Girl Scout leader, outdoor adventurer, and fitness fanatic who spends much of her free time outdoors.

Deborah Retes

Deborah Retes graduated from the University of San Diego Paralegal Studies Program in 2005. She continued her education and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management from theUniversity of Phoenix in 2008. She has been working in the legal field since 2004 and has had the privilege of working with a variety of attorneys in San Diego. Through this invaluable experience, Deborah has greatly honed her legal skills, and continues to do so.

Deborah works directly with insurance adjusters where she competently navigates through the insurance arena. Her education, experience, strong work ethic, and interest in the law enable her to better serve the firm’s clients.

Deborah speaks, reads, and writes Spanish fluently, and is the firm’s Public Notary. In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her daughter, family and friends, play with her dogs, and exercise.
